At one Iowa reception, we built a live game show between dinner and toasts: bridesmaids versus groomsmen, the whole room in on it, because the couple and I planned it together. Here's the point that matters — a DJ assigned to your date three weeks out cannot do this.

The Live Read
On the night, the plan sets the rails and the room drives the train. True open-format DJing — country to hip-hop to polka in the same set if that's what the crowd is — with a live guest request platform feeding the read in real time. Your must-plays and do-not-plays are the rails. Twenty-five years of reading Iowa dance floors drives the train.

Why I don't run a second-by-second playlist
A reception once arrived pre-programmed to the second — no reads, no audibles, no requests. The floor died and the night ended early. Here's the lesson I teach every couple: total control kills dance floors; collaboration plus live authority fills them. Your must-plays and do-not-plays are always the rails. Between them, you're trusting a professional to read the room — because that's the part a list can't do.
